Day 66 – Rotorua, New Zealand

One of the greatest days of my entire trip. That’s bold. But it was an adventure-packed day from start to finish. We left our accommodation in Waitomo around 0830 and took a short walk around Ruakuri Caves.

The next stop for the day was Hobbiton! Hobbiton is where the movie set for Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit filmed The Shire. As a massive LOTR fan, I knew this was going to be one of the highlights for the trip. We got dropped off at Hobbiton and had some time to browse the gift shop before our 1145 tour. We got picked up by a tour bus and started our short drive to the movie set.

Once we stepped foot into The Shire, we were surrounded by rolling hills and hobbit holes. It was truly a 360 degree view from Bag End down to the Green Dragon. The film crew did not skip out on the attention to detail on the set. There was even a tree with hundreds of hand-glued leaves built for The Hobbit! It was amazing.

We took a tour through Hobbiton, including an opportunity to take pictures from inside one of the hobbit holes, before finishing up with a free beer/cider in the Green Dragon pub.
